Creative Nonfiction Writing Class with John R. Nelson

February 4, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Creative nonfiction refers broadly to fact-based essays, written for publication, that emphasize point of view and often employ narration. The class will focus on the basics of writing creative nonfiction: purpose, audience, shaping, voice and tone, style, and use of sources. Most class time will be devoted to critiques of student writing, and all students will be expected to share at least one original piece of creative nonfiction and critique the work of fellow students.

John R. Nelson is the author of Flight Calls: Exploring Massachusetts through Birds, published in 2019 by the University of Massachusetts Press. John has contributed creative nonfiction to many literary and nature magazines. His essay “Funny Bird Sex” from the Antioch Review was awarded a 2018 Pushcart Prize, and his narrative essay “Coming of Old Age in Samoa” has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize by The Missouri Review. A longtime Gloucester resident, John is a professor emeritus at North Shore Community College.

The class will run for six Tuesdays starting February 4 through March 10 and will be held at the Maud / Olson Library.
Class price: $200 per person. Minimum enrollment 6, maximum 12
