In 1933, Hans Hofmann (1880–1966) found himself on the rocky coast line of Massachusetts’s North Shore and picked up his brushes again. On the invitation from a former student, Hofmann taught art in Gloucester for two summers—where the connection to place, specifically the coastal environments of New England, made a deep impact on the artist and teacher widely considered a profound influence on American modern art. This talk will trace Hofmann’s creative journey in Gloucester into Provincetown. This program is being offered in collaboration with the Peabody Essex Museum in conjunction with their special exhibition Hans Hofmann: The Nature of Abstraction on view from September 21, 2019 to January 5, 2020 at the Peabody Essex Museum.
