SUMMARY:Jeff Weaver Solo Show at The North Shore Arts Association
DESCRIPTION:The North Shore Arts Association welcomes you to experience a solo exhibition of works by North Shore Arts member and critically acclaimed painter\, Jeffrey Weaver\, on view from August 6 – August 30\, 2026 with a Reception Friday\, August 7 from 6PM-8PM. Jeff Weaver\, born and raised in Massachusetts\, showed early artistic talent\, taking portrait commissions by age fourteen and winning statewide awards in drawing and sculpture while studying under sculptor Eleanor Marvin. After high school\, he attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and moved to Gloucester in 1972\, where he sketched and painted the waterfront daily. He supported himself through waterfront jobs\, boat portrait commissions\, and more than 30 murals throughout the city. Since returning to fine art in the 1990s\, he has focused on depicting Gloucester and now operates a studio/gallery on Rogers Street along the waterfront. \nMore of Jeff’s work can be found on his website\, jeffweaverfineart.com.

SUMMARY:Avery\, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea
DESCRIPTION:“Avery\, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea” explores the artistic bond between three pivotal 20th century American artists—Milton Avery (1885–1965)\, Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974)\, and Mark Rothko (1903-1970)—whose shared summers in Gloucester\, Massachusetts\, from the 1920s to the mid-1940s had a lasting impact on their work. The exhibit is being presented through a collaboration between the Cape Ann Museum and The Phillips Collection (Washington\, D.C.). On view at the Cape Ann Museum from June 30 through September 27\, 2026\, the exhibition will then be displayed at The Phillips Collection from October 24\, 2026\, through January 24\, 2027. \nAs the first Cape Ann Museum generated show to then be taken on by another institution\, the Museum is working in close collaboration with all three artists’ estates. The show will feature over 82 works from the 1920s to the 1960s\, with loans from 26 prominent national and private institutional collections\, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, which is a central partner lending 10 works by Mark Rothko to the exhibition. Many works in this exhibition have never been on public view. \nThis unprecedented exhibit\, accompanied by a 224-page catalog produced by Rizzoli Electa\, will reveal the deep connections between these artists\, emphasizing their roles as both mentors and peers\, while showcasing the unique working methods and lifelong friendships that shaped their groundbreaking art. The catalog\, in addition to including essays by Eliza Rathbone\, will also feature contributions by prominent art scholars and curators. \nOrganized for the Cape Ann Museum by guest curator\, Eliza Rathbone\, Chief Curator Emerita of The Phillips Collection in collaboration with The Phillips Collection\, Washington\, D.C.

SUMMARY:Falconry & the Medieval World: A Live Bird Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Wingmasters’ Birds of Prey returns to the Hammond Castle Museum! \nFalconry is the sport of hunting with a trained bird of prey. It is also the demanding art of training a predatory bird that is by nature wary of people to hunt cooperatively with a human partner. While the sport has a 4\,000-year history\, its glory days were indisputably in the medieval period. While this presentation centers around live birds used in falconry\, it is not a flight demonstration but a history-rich look at an ancient sport. Focusing on the medieval period\, it explains the characteristics of the birds of prey used\, how the sport reflected the lifestyle of the time\, and the historical reasons behind falconry’s rise and fall. \nPlease note: This program is only intended for ages 8 and up. Tickets for this event are $20 adults\, $10 kids. This ticket grants you access to the Falconry & the Medieval World: A Live Bird Presentation\, which will be held in a tent on the ocean-facing lawn\, as well as access to the Museum Shop. A separate tour ticket will be required to enter beyond the Museum Shop for a guided or self-guided tour. Ticket holders may purchase Self-Guided Tour tickets in the Museum Shop at a 20% discount. \nAbout WINGMASTERS:\nJulie Anne Collier and Jim Parks are both licensed wildlife rehabilitators based in Massachusetts and are dedicated to increasing public understanding and appreciation of North American birds of prey. Together they care for injured birds of prey at their private center in Leverett\, Massachusetts. Most of the birds they rehabilitate can ultimately be released back into the wild\, but in some cases\, the birds are left permanently handicapped. Julie and Jim are further licensed to provide a home for these non-releasable raptors and to use them for educational programs. Since 1994\, WINGMASTERS has presented over 10\,000 programs at schools\, libraries\, and museums throughout New England. \nAll proceeds from this educational program support additional educational programs and ongoing Museum restorations. Join us as New York City-based Alison Cook Beatty Dance performs a site-specific dance sure to inspire wonder.\nQuarry Dance is Windhover’s signature summer project\, the vision of Windhover’s founder\, the late Ina Hahn. Her vision marries the art of modern dance with the pristine landscapes of the quarries on Cape Ann. Utilizing the natural amphitheaters of these quarries opens up a world where art and nature can co-mingle. \nThree performances offered:\nFriday\, August 7 from 1:30-3:30pm\nSaturday\, August 8 from 10:30am-12:30 pm\nSunday\, August 9 from 1:30-3:30pm \nTimes include shuttle service to and from Windhover. \nThis year’s Quarry Dance will take place at a private quarry in Lanesville. A shuttle will transport you from the Windhover parking lot to the performance and return you afterward. No parking is available at the performance site.
