He loves to share the historical and cultural background of songs\, and his Fishermen’s Ballads Project explores the 1874 Gloucester publication Fishermen’s Ballads and Songs of the Sea. He hosts Celtic Music Sunset Sails on schooner ARDELLE\nevery Sunday June thru September. \nGary Dolinsky performs original songs and traditional folk music from North America\, England\, Ireland and Scotland accompanying himself on guitar\, Irish bouzouki\, and Anglo-Concertina. Formerly of the critically acclaimed folk-duo Compass Rose\, and more recently with the Loose Change Trio\, Gary has performed extensively in the New England coffeehouse/club circuit. He has shared the stage with premier national artists including Chris Smither\, Bill Staines\, Pete Seeger\, Greg Brown and Sally Rogers at some venerable music venues in the Northeast region.

DESCRIPTION:The North Shore Arts Association welcomes you to experience a solo exhibition of works by North Shore Arts member and critically acclaimed painter\, Jeffrey Weaver\, on view from August 6 – August 30\, 2026 with a Reception Friday\, August 7 from 6PM-8PM. Jeff Weaver\, born and raised in Massachusetts\, showed early artistic talent\, taking portrait commissions by age fourteen and winning statewide awards in drawing and sculpture while studying under sculptor Eleanor Marvin. After high school\, he attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and moved to Gloucester in 1972\, where he sketched and painted the waterfront daily. He supported himself through waterfront jobs\, boat portrait commissions\, and more than 30 murals throughout the city. Since returning to fine art in the 1990s\, he has focused on depicting Gloucester and now operates a studio/gallery on Rogers Street along the waterfront. \nMore of Jeff’s work can be found on his website\, jeffweaverfineart.com.

SUMMARY:Avery\, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea
DESCRIPTION:“Avery\, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea” explores the artistic bond between three pivotal 20th century American artists—Milton Avery (1885–1965)\, Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974)\, and Mark Rothko (1903-1970)—whose shared summers in Gloucester\, Massachusetts\, from the 1920s to the mid-1940s had a lasting impact on their work. The exhibit is being presented through a collaboration between the Cape Ann Museum and The Phillips Collection (Washington\, D.C.). On view at the Cape Ann Museum from June 30 through September 27\, 2026\, the exhibition will then be displayed at The Phillips Collection from October 24\, 2026\, through January 24\, 2027. \nAs the first Cape Ann Museum generated show to then be taken on by another institution\, the Museum is working in close collaboration with all three artists’ estates. The show will feature over 82 works from the 1920s to the 1960s\, with loans from 26 prominent national and private institutional collections\, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, which is a central partner lending 10 works by Mark Rothko to the exhibition. Many works in this exhibition have never been on public view. \nThis unprecedented exhibit\, accompanied by a 224-page catalog produced by Rizzoli Electa\, will reveal the deep connections between these artists\, emphasizing their roles as both mentors and peers\, while showcasing the unique working methods and lifelong friendships that shaped their groundbreaking art. The catalog\, in addition to including essays by Eliza Rathbone\, will also feature contributions by prominent art scholars and curators. \nOrganized for the Cape Ann Museum by guest curator\, Eliza Rathbone\, Chief Curator Emerita of The Phillips Collection in collaboration with The Phillips Collection\, Washington\, D.C.

DESCRIPTION:From stick figure doodlers to first-rate talents\, join us for a seaside\, En Plein Air sketch class with Sue Wheeler of Arts Abound in Magnolia. All skill levels are welcome! This two-hour session includes a 30-minute beginner sketch lesson. All you need to bring is a sketchbook\, pencils\, a ruler\, and an eraser. Please note: watercolors\, pastels\, oils\, or acrylics are not permitted on the Museum grounds. \nAttendees who wish to tour the Hammond Castle Museum after this class are entitled to a 20% discount on a self-guided tour. She enjoys using her creative flair in quilting and interior design as well. \nSue graduated from the University of Denver with a Bachelor’s in business with a focus on hospitality management and earned an associate’s degree from the Culinary Institute of America. Following her tenure as a pastry chef in New Hampshire\, Sue returned to school for a certificate in graphic design and put her talents to use as a designer in the book publishing and art publishing industries in Vermont. In early 2019\, Sue opened her own gallery and studio\, Arts Abound in Magnolia Village\, MA\, as an artistic haven for local artists. Through the gallery\, over 30 artists featured their creative works\, ranging from paintings\, hand-painted silk scarves\, silver jewelry\, and more. Sue also ran many workshops and classes featuring many of the artists. Often\, Sue would work late into the night\, painting in her Arts Abound studio. After closing the gallery in 2022\, Sue continued to offer the often sold-out painting classes\, taught by some of the Arts Abound artists. \nSue has studied under numerous artists to learn watercolor\, acrylic painting\, cold wax & oil\, and collage. Her goals for the Hammond Castle Museum sketch classes are to engage those who are new to the world of art and reinvigorate those who haven’t picked up a blank canvas or sketch pad in a long time. Sue’s philosophy on the creative process encourages you to be less concerned about the final product and instead to enjoy the journey of creativity and get lost in the moment. Once you find yourself in your work\, you may just be surprised!

DESCRIPTION:The North Shore Arts Association welcomes you to experience a solo exhibition of works by North Shore Arts member and critically acclaimed painter\, Jeffrey Weaver\, on view from August 6 – August 30\, 2026 with a Reception Friday\, August 7 from 6PM-8PM. Jeff Weaver\, born and raised in Massachusetts\, showed early artistic talent\, taking portrait commissions by age fourteen and winning statewide awards in drawing and sculpture while studying under sculptor Eleanor Marvin. DESCRIPTION:“Avery\, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea” explores the artistic bond between three pivotal 20th century American artists—Milton Avery (1885–1965)\, Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974)\, and Mark Rothko (1903-1970)—whose shared summers in Gloucester\, Massachusetts\, from the 1920s to the mid-1940s had a lasting impact on their work. The exhibit is being presented through a collaboration between the Cape Ann Museum and The Phillips Collection (Washington\, D.C.). On view at the Cape Ann Museum from June 30 through September 27\, 2026\, the exhibition will then be displayed at The Phillips Collection from October 24\, 2026\, through January 24\, 2027. \nAs the first Cape Ann Museum generated show to then be taken on by another institution\, the Museum is working in close collaboration with all three artists’ estates. The show will feature over 82 works from the 1920s to the 1960s\, with loans from 26 prominent national and private institutional collections\, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, which is a central partner lending 10 works by Mark Rothko to the exhibition. Many works in this exhibition have never been on public view. \nThis unprecedented exhibit\, accompanied by a 224-page catalog produced by Rizzoli Electa\, will reveal the deep connections between these artists\, emphasizing their roles as both mentors and peers\, while showcasing the unique working methods and lifelong friendships that shaped their groundbreaking art. The catalog\, in addition to including essays by Eliza Rathbone\, will also feature contributions by prominent art scholars and curators. \nOrganized for the Cape Ann Museum by guest curator\, Eliza Rathbone\, Chief Curator Emerita of The Phillips Collection in collaboration with The Phillips Collection\, Washington\, D.C.

DESCRIPTION:Wingmasters’ Birds of Prey returns to the Hammond Castle Museum! \nFalconry is the sport of hunting with a trained bird of prey. It is also the demanding art of training a predatory bird that is by nature wary of people to hunt cooperatively with a human partner. While the sport has a 4\,000-year history\, its glory days were indisputably in the medieval period. While this presentation centers around live birds used in falconry\, it is not a flight demonstration but a history-rich look at an ancient sport. Focusing on the medieval period\, it explains the characteristics of the birds of prey used\, how the sport reflected the lifestyle of the time\, and the historical reasons behind falconry’s rise and fall. \nPlease note: This program is only intended for ages 8 and up. Tickets for this event are $20 adults\, $10 kids. This ticket grants you access to the Falconry & the Medieval World: A Live Bird Presentation\, which will be held in a tent on the ocean-facing lawn\, as well as access to the Museum Shop. Together they care for injured birds of prey at their private center in Leverett\, Massachusetts. Most of the birds they rehabilitate can ultimately be released back into the wild\, but in some cases\, the birds are left permanently handicapped. Julie and Jim are further licensed to provide a home for these non-releasable raptors and to use them for educational programs. DESCRIPTION:Join noted raconteur Phil Storey for this “fun filled” Phil Facts about Gloucester’s deep literary past! \nPhil Storey is a local local historian\, noted raconteur\, and master storyteller. He developed this engaging literary walking tour during Gloucester’s 400+ celebration and is excited to continue hosting it in partnership with the Gloucester Writers Center. \nGloucester has long been home to remarkable writers and literary voices. From early pioneers like Judith Sargent Murray and her groundbreaking feminist writings\, to Nobel Prize-winning poet T.S. Eliot\, who spent many summers of his boyhood in Gloucester\, the city’s connection to literature runs deep. Gloucester’s landscape\, harbor\, and sea life have inspired generations of writers and poets. \nThe tour also explores the rich poetic dialogue between Charles Olson and Vincent Ferrini in the twentieth century\, as well as the many visiting authors who came to Gloucester seeking inspiration. These include Rudyard Kipling\, author of Captains Courageous; Henry Wadsworth Longfellow\, whose poem The Wreck of the Hesperus was inspired by the region; and horror master H.P. Lovecraft\, whose The Shadow Over Innsmouth echoes the atmosphere of Cape Ann’s fishing towns. SUMMARY:Avery\, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea
DESCRIPTION:“Avery\, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea” explores the artistic bond between three pivotal 20th century American artists—Milton Avery (1885–1965)\, Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974)\, and Mark Rothko (1903-1970)—whose shared summers in Gloucester\, Massachusetts\, from the 1920s to the mid-1940s had a lasting impact on their work. The exhibit is being presented through a collaboration between the Cape Ann Museum and The Phillips Collection (Washington\, D.C.). On view at the Cape Ann Museum from June 30 through September 27\, 2026\, the exhibition will then be displayed at The Phillips Collection from October 24\, 2026\, through January 24\, 2027. \nAs the first Cape Ann Museum generated show to then be taken on by another institution\, the Museum is working in close collaboration with all three artists’ estates. The show will feature over 82 works from the 1920s to the 1960s\, with loans from 26 prominent national and private institutional collections\, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, which is a central partner lending 10 works by Mark Rothko to the exhibition. Many works in this exhibition have never been on public view. \nThis unprecedented exhibit\, accompanied by a 224-page catalog produced by Rizzoli Electa\, will reveal the deep connections between these artists\, emphasizing their roles as both mentors and peers\, while showcasing the unique working methods and lifelong friendships that shaped their groundbreaking art. The catalog\, in addition to including essays by Eliza Rathbone\, will also feature contributions by prominent art scholars and curators. \nOrganized for the Cape Ann Museum by guest curator\, Eliza Rathbone\, Chief Curator Emerita of The Phillips Collection in collaboration with The Phillips Collection\, Washington\, D.C.

Join us as New York City-based Alison Cook Beatty Dance performs a site-specific dance sure to inspire wonder.\nQuarry Dance is Windhover’s signature summer project\, the vision of Windhover’s founder\, the late Ina Hahn. Her vision marries the art of modern dance with the pristine landscapes of the quarries on Cape Ann. Utilizing the natural amphitheaters of these quarries opens up a world where art and nature can co-mingle. \nThree performances offered:\nFriday\, August 7 from 1:30-3:30pm\nSaturday\, August 8 from 10:30am-12:30 pm\nSunday\, August 9 from 1:30-3:30pm \nTimes include shuttle service to and from Windhover. \nThis year’s Quarry Dance will take place at a private quarry in Lanesville. A shuttle will transport you from the Windhover parking lot to the performance and return you afterward. No parking is available at the performance site. Quarry Dance admission (including shuttle service) is FREE. No advance RSVP required. Donations are most welcome!\nIn the event of rain\, Quarry Dance is subject to cancellation.
