DESCRIPTION:“Avery\, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea” explores the artistic bond between three pivotal 20th century American artists—Milton Avery (1885–1965)\, Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974)\, and Mark Rothko (1903-1970)—whose shared summers in Gloucester\, Massachusetts\, from the 1920s to the mid-1940s had a lasting impact on their work. The exhibit is being presented through a collaboration between the Cape Ann Museum and The Phillips Collection (Washington\, D.C.). On view at the Cape Ann Museum from June 30 through September 27\, 2026\, the exhibition will then be displayed at The Phillips Collection from October 24\, 2026\, through January 24\, 2027. \nAs the first Cape Ann Museum generated show to then be taken on by another institution\, the Museum is working in close collaboration with all three artists’ estates. The show will feature over 82 works from the 1920s to the 1960s\, with loans from 26 prominent national and private institutional collections\, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, which is a central partner lending 10 works by Mark Rothko to the exhibition. Many works in this exhibition have never been on public view. \nThis unprecedented exhibit\, accompanied by a 224-page catalog produced by Rizzoli Electa\, will reveal the deep connections between these artists\, emphasizing their roles as both mentors and peers\, while showcasing the unique working methods and lifelong friendships that shaped their groundbreaking art. DESCRIPTION:Singer\, saxophonist\, flutist\, actor\, Stan Strickland has performed extensively throughout the United States\, Europe\, New Zealand and the former Soviet Union. He has performed with the Boston Pops\, the Village People\, Aretha Franklin\, and jazz greats Yusef Lateef\, Pharoah Sanders\, Shirley Scott and Marlena Shaw\, and opened for Miles Davis\, Sonny Rollins\, Natalie Cole and The Bare Naked Ladies.Stan is an associate professor of voice at Berklee College of Music and executive co-director of Express Yourself\, a multi-cultural arts agency that serves mentally ill youth through the Department of Mental Health. He received a MA degree from Lesley University in Expressive Arts Therapy with a major in dance therapy. He has performed and worked many modern dance companies including members of the Alvin Ailey\, José Limón\, and Bill T. Jones companies and Dance Collective of Boston.

SUMMARY:Avery\, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea
DESCRIPTION:“Avery\, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea” explores the artistic bond between three pivotal 20th century American artists—Milton Avery (1885–1965)\, Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974)\, and Mark Rothko (1903-1970)—whose shared summers in Gloucester\, Massachusetts\, from the 1920s to the mid-1940s had a lasting impact on their work. The exhibit is being presented through a collaboration between the Cape Ann Museum and The Phillips Collection (Washington\, D.C.). On view at the Cape Ann Museum from June 30 through September 27\, 2026\, the exhibition will then be displayed at The Phillips Collection from October 24\, 2026\, through January 24\, 2027. \nAs the first Cape Ann Museum generated show to then be taken on by another institution\, the Museum is working in close collaboration with all three artists’ estates. The show will feature over 82 works from the 1920s to the 1960s\, with loans from 26 prominent national and private institutional collections\, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, which is a central partner lending 10 works by Mark Rothko to the exhibition. Many works in this exhibition have never been on public view. \nThis unprecedented exhibit\, accompanied by a 224-page catalog produced by Rizzoli Electa\, will reveal the deep connections between these artists\, emphasizing their roles as both mentors and peers\, while showcasing the unique working methods and lifelong friendships that shaped their groundbreaking art. The catalog\, in addition to including essays by Eliza Rathbone\, will also feature contributions by prominent art scholars and curators. \nOrganized for the Cape Ann Museum by guest curator\, Eliza Rathbone\, Chief Curator Emerita of The Phillips Collection in collaboration with The Phillips Collection\, Washington\, D.C.

DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in Gloucester MA before cutting his teeth as the manager of the iconic Saratoga Springs listening room Caffe Lena\, Reese Fulmer has emerged “with a poet’s sensibility rich with great storytelling and a healthy dose of irony.” (Viv Nesbitt\, Art of the Song) The 2023 and 2024 Americana Artist of the Year at the Thomas Edison Music Awards\, Reese and his band have become one of the fastest-rising groups in upstate NY with expansive live albums highlighting a reputation for compelling performances. With a rotating cast of talented players\, a broad and dynamic body of work\, and a refusal to set anything in stone\, their shows are always fresh\, full of joy\, and hard to describe. Think Wilco with hints of Prine and Zappa: “smart\, emotionally tuned arrangements and a stage presence that balanced earnestness with unpredictability. \nTheir live performance thrives in the liminal space between genres folk\, Americana\, jazz and the result is a sound that’s complex without being convoluted.” (NYSMusic) Fresh off a sold out performance at Old Sloop Coffeehouse in November\, where the band performed as a quartet\, they will return to Cape Ann for the first time with the entire ensemble.
