DESCRIPTION:“Avery\, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea” explores the artistic bond between three pivotal 20th century American artists—Milton Avery (1885–1965)\, Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974)\, and Mark Rothko (1903-1970)—whose shared summers in Gloucester\, Massachusetts\, from the 1920s to the mid-1940s had a lasting impact on their work. The exhibit is being presented through a collaboration between the Cape Ann Museum and The Phillips Collection (Washington\, D.C.). On view at the Cape Ann Museum from June 30 through September 27\, 2026\, the exhibition will then be displayed at The Phillips Collection from October 24\, 2026\, through January 24\, 2027. \nAs the first Cape Ann Museum generated show to then be taken on by another institution\, the Museum is working in close collaboration with all three artists’ estates. The show will feature over 82 works from the 1920s to the 1960s\, with loans from 26 prominent national and private institutional collections\, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, which is a central partner lending 10 works by Mark Rothko to the exhibition. Many works in this exhibition have never been on public view. \nThis unprecedented exhibit\, accompanied by a 224-page catalog produced by Rizzoli Electa\, will reveal the deep connections between these artists\, emphasizing their roles as both mentors and peers\, while showcasing the unique working methods and lifelong friendships that shaped their groundbreaking art. The catalog\, in addition to including essays by Eliza Rathbone\, will also feature contributions by prominent art scholars and curators. \nOrganized for the Cape Ann Museum by guest curator\, Eliza Rathbone\, Chief Curator Emerita of The Phillips Collection in collaboration with The Phillips Collection\, Washington\, D.C.

SUMMARY:Delta Generators with Julie Rhodes
DESCRIPTION:Real music by real people\, played live and recorded live. This best embodies the philosophy of\nestablished Boston band Delta Generators and their approach for their latest record ON & ON.\nIn an industry where technology has become the standard and intelligence has become artificial\,\nDelta Generators are keeping it real and will continue to do so going forward. All the songs on\nthis record were written\, arranged and rehearsed over a period of eight days and then recorded in\ntwo days at Power Station N.E. in Waterford\, CT by Evan Bakke\, best known for his work with\nWarren Haynes and Prince. The idea was to get together\, play and when something feels right\,\nwork it! No preconceived ideas as to what it should be. A journey of liberation\, inspiration and\nperspiration. Yeah\, Blues is the vehicle\, but their lifelong love of rock music is the fuel that\npowers it. \nBrothers Charlie and Rick O’Neal\, on guitar and bass respectively\, have been playing together\nsince their teenage years. Most notably as members of Benjamin Orr’s band\, former singer and\nbass player with The Cars. Sometimes they would go off and do other projects\, Charlie toured\nwith UK band Must and Rick played in Boston guitar hero Johnny A’s band\, but inevitably they\nwould play together again and again. Charlie had been playing in rock bands throughout\nhis early years\, but he was always a huge fan of Blues guitar. He spent years honing his abilities\nby playing along with records. When the opportunity presented itself for a Blues driven side\nproject\, he was all in. That moment altered his future\, placing him in the position to celebrate his\npassion for personal heroes like Elmore James\, Freddie King and Albert Collins. \nWhen the ensemble was first conceived\, a lover of R&B and Soul named Craig Rawding took\nthe mic as the original front man. Charlie O’Neal brought on his brother Rick as the bassist. And \nin 2007\, the Delta Generators were born. The initial drummer had to bail after a few months\, so\nup-and-coming percussionist Jeff Armstrong was brought into the fold. By 2008\, it was no\nlonger a side project\, and they captured the win at the Boston Blues Challenge. They went on to \nMemphis to compete in the International Blues Challenge where they almost took the top spot. \nFrom there the band went on to forge a solid place in the Boston Blues scene. They went on to\nrecord four records before Craig decided to leave the band in 2016. Enter Brian Templeton\, a\nfixture in the local scene since 1991. His band The Radio Kings had already recorded for two\nlabels\, and he had toured all across the U.S. and Europe with them and as a solo artist. A\nconsummate showman and lover of the spirit\, Brian was rooted in the rock music of his youth\nand was already a seasoned Blues Man. It was a perfect fit and the rest as they say is history.\n“Brian lifted the DGs to a new level with his showmanship and drive\,” says Charlie\, “I don’t\nthink the band would have continued if Brian hadn’t joined.” Brother Rick continues\, “Besides\nhis top-notch vocals\, Brian brought a powerful stage presence and killer harmonica playing to\nthe mix and his lyric writing is in a class all by itself.” \nThe new album is anything but vanilla. After all these years together\, the quartet has a voice and\nswagger that is all their own. The new repertoire is a pure collaboration that has captured what\nmakes this union of these four musicians so organic and pure in its creation. Drummer Jeff\nArmstrong shares\, “Unlike the previous record\, which was more of a compilation of great songs\,\nthis new record stands in itself as a complete cohesive work.” Guitarist Charlie O’Neal offers \, \n“ON & ON perfectly captures the live spirit of the band and is by far sonically superior to any of our previous albums.” \nDelta Generators love writing and recording but they live to play live. Making a connection with\ntheir fans is the most important part of it. As Templeton says. “Making a spiritual bond with the\npeople\, our fans\, is why we do what we do. There really is no other reason.”

Each session features a work of art or object that is new to view—whether a recent acquisition or a work newly installed in the galleries. \nThe program begins in the Education Room at our Downtown Campus with a brief introduction and visual context before moving into the galleries for an extended exploration of the featured work. Guided by observation\, curiosity\, and conversation\, participants are encouraged to share ideas\, consider different perspectives\, and discover new connections together. \nThis week for Artful Conversations \nThis presentation explores Baptism by photographer Anne Rearick\, whose work is featured in a special museum exhibition. Rooted in the tradition of documentary photography\, Rearick distinguishes herself through her long-term relationships with the people and places she photographs\, including the Gloucester community. Through Baptism and related works\, she captures the importance of shared public spaces as places where people gather\, build connections\, create traditions\, and foster a sense of belonging. Her photographs reveal how community life unfolds over time\, preserving collective experiences and cultural memory. \nAlthough Miriam Weinstein has lived on Cape Ann for more than three decades\, she loves finding new places and new stories and sharing them with visitors. She was a painting major in college and thought of herself as a visual person until she became\, first\, a documentary filmmaker and then a journalist. Having spent the bulk of her professional life as a writer\, she now thinks she might be a word person after all. She was a staff member at North Shore Weeklies newspapers for many years. Her book\, Yiddish: A Nation of Words\, won the National Jewish Book award. Her book\, The Surprising Power of Family Meals gave her a platform to lecture and consult on the topic internationally. Miriam likes changing gears\, which fits well with CAM’s varied collection. She gives tours to adults\, family groups\, and kids. She enjoys moving quickly and making sure that everyone stays engaged. She loves the fact that tours can be very personalized. Each tour is different\, depending on the interests of the docent and the guests\, as well as the changing exhibits. Much like Cape Ann\, Museum visits are creative\, personable\, idiosyncratic\, and rich in beauty and history.

DESCRIPTION:“Avery\, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea” explores the artistic bond between three pivotal 20th century American artists—Milton Avery (1885–1965)\, Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974)\, and Mark Rothko (1903-1970)—whose shared summers in Gloucester\, Massachusetts\, from the 1920s to the mid-1940s had a lasting impact on their work. The exhibit is being presented through a collaboration between the Cape Ann Museum and The Phillips Collection (Washington\, D.C.). On view at the Cape Ann Museum from June 30 through September 27\, 2026\, the exhibition will then be displayed at The Phillips Collection from October 24\, 2026\, through January 24\, 2027. \nAs the first Cape Ann Museum generated show to then be taken on by another institution\, the Museum is working in close collaboration with all three artists’ estates. The show will feature over 82 works from the 1920s to the 1960s\, with loans from 26 prominent national and private institutional collections\, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, which is a central partner lending 10 works by Mark Rothko to the exhibition. Many works in this exhibition have never been on public view. \nThis unprecedented exhibit\, accompanied by a 224-page catalog produced by Rizzoli Electa\, will reveal the deep connections between these artists\, emphasizing their roles as both mentors and peers\, while showcasing the unique working methods and lifelong friendships that shaped their groundbreaking art. SUMMARY:Bim Skala Bim w/ special guest The Chip Rockers
DESCRIPTION:Bim Skala Bim formed in Boston\, MA over 40 years ago as a Ska Rocksteady and Reggae band that was influenced by the bands in England’s 2 Tone movement\, as well as the music of the Clash\, UB40 and Bob Marley. Bim’s infectious Boston Blue Beat sound led them to be one of the premier bands kick-starting the Third Wave of Ska in the 1980s. Other bands quickly followed their example resulting in a lively scene in Boston and much of the United States.
