DESCRIPTION:“Avery\, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea” explores the artistic bond between three pivotal 20th century American artists—Milton Avery (1885–1965)\, Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974)\, and Mark Rothko (1903-1970)—whose shared summers in Gloucester\, Massachusetts\, from the 1920s to the mid-1940s had a lasting impact on their work. The exhibit is being presented through a collaboration between the Cape Ann Museum and The Phillips Collection (Washington\, D.C.). On view at the Cape Ann Museum from June 30 through September 27\, 2026\, the exhibition will then be displayed at The Phillips Collection from October 24\, 2026\, through January 24\, 2027. \nAs the first Cape Ann Museum generated show to then be taken on by another institution\, the Museum is working in close collaboration with all three artists’ estates. The show will feature over 82 works from the 1920s to the 1960s\, with loans from 26 prominent national and private institutional collections\, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, which is a central partner lending 10 works by Mark Rothko to the exhibition. Many works in this exhibition have never been on public view. \nThis unprecedented exhibit\, accompanied by a 224-page catalog produced by Rizzoli Electa\, will reveal the deep connections between these artists\, emphasizing their roles as both mentors and peers\, while showcasing the unique working methods and lifelong friendships that shaped their groundbreaking art. The catalog\, in addition to including essays by Eliza Rathbone\, will also feature contributions by prominent art scholars and curators. \nOrganized for the Cape Ann Museum by guest curator\, Eliza Rathbone\, Chief Curator Emerita of The Phillips Collection in collaboration with The Phillips Collection\, Washington\, D.C.

SUMMARY:CAM Talk: Cape Ann Museum – Then\, Now\, and Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Join the Bayliss Society at the Cape Ann Museum on September 13 for the closing program of this year’s Jonathan Bayliss Society annual conference\, “Gloucester’s Acropolis: Defining the City Then and Now.” This final session features a series of short talks exploring the role and influence of Cape Ann Museum in the community life of Gloucester throughout its existence\, with a glimpse toward an exciting future as well. \nSpeakers are CAM’s Director Oliver Barker\, Chief Curator Martha Oaks\, and former Museum volunteer Deanie Hancock French. Deanie’s father\, the major American sculptor Walker Hancock\, was involved for many years in the development of what was then called the Cape Ann Historical Association. \nAbout the Conference \nNovelist Jonathan Bayliss (1926–2009) coined the term Acropolis to describe the cluster of civic institutions rising above Gloucester Harbor—City Hall\, Sawyer Free Library\, the Museum\, and neighboring landmarks. This year’s conference brings that idea to life through talks\, walks\, and readings from September 11–13\, exploring how this hillside cultural district has shaped Gloucester from the 19th century to today. \nThe conference is organized by the Jonathan Bayliss Society in collaboration with Cape Ann Museum\, Gloucester Writers Center\, and Sawyer Free Library\, with support from the Gloucester Cultural Council\, Mass Cultural Council\, and the Bruce Cove Foundation. \nMore information is available at http://www.jonathanbayliss.org/acropolis.

DESCRIPTION:Besides headlining A-List comedy clubs for almost forty years\, Paul has also opened for over sixty internationally known recording acts including Ray Charles\, Aretha Franklin\, Tom Jones\, Tony Bennett\, The Beach Boys\, Chicago\, The Four Tops\, The Temptations\, The Doobie Brothers\, Jerry Lee Lewis\, Lyle Lovett\, and George Carlin\, and has performed in many famed entertainment venues ranging from the legendary Friar’s Club and the main ballroom of New York City’s Waldorf Astoria\, to the main showroom at Harrah’s Casino and Caesar’s Palace. \nPaul co-starred in the popular stand-up comedy movie The Godfathers of Comedy on Showtime\, and is also the author of six hilarious books that have won numerous literary awards. \nCarolyn Plummer. God help us. Some comics rely on the monumental events of the day or the faux pas of the rich and famous. Not Carolyn. Carolyn pulls material from the hum-drum\, day-to-day monotony of the life of everyman; and she does it well. To Carolyn the monumental is easy… it’s our existence that’s so hard\, yet so ridiculous. Some women look in the mirror and complain that they aren’t pretty enough\, not rich enough\, not young enough. Carolyn gives her reflection the finger.

His career took a significant turn in 2000 when Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers Band recruited him as a keyboardist and vocalist\, leading to a fruitful collaboration and tour. \nRyan Taylor on slide guitar spearheads the band with his exceptional talents. His journey\, steeped in the rich musical traditions of Austin and Nashville\, saw Ryan honing his craft the old-fashioned way. \nJohnny Trama on guitar conjures up riffs and rhythms that speak volumes. DESCRIPTION:“Avery\, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea” explores the artistic bond between three pivotal 20th century American artists—Milton Avery (1885–1965)\, Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974)\, and Mark Rothko (1903-1970)—whose shared summers in Gloucester\, Massachusetts\, from the 1920s to the mid-1940s had a lasting impact on their work. The exhibit is being presented through a collaboration between the Cape Ann Museum and The Phillips Collection (Washington\, D.C.). On view at the Cape Ann Museum from June 30 through September 27\, 2026\, the exhibition will then be displayed at The Phillips Collection from October 24\, 2026\, through January 24\, 2027. \nAs the first Cape Ann Museum generated show to then be taken on by another institution\, the Museum is working in close collaboration with all three artists’ estates. The show will feature over 82 works from the 1920s to the 1960s\, with loans from 26 prominent national and private institutional collections\, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, which is a central partner lending 10 works by Mark Rothko to the exhibition. Many works in this exhibition have never been on public view. \nThis unprecedented exhibit\, accompanied by a 224-page catalog produced by Rizzoli Electa\, will reveal the deep connections between these artists\, emphasizing their roles as both mentors and peers\, while showcasing the unique working methods and lifelong friendships that shaped their groundbreaking art. The catalog\, in addition to including essays by Eliza Rathbone\, will also feature contributions by prominent art scholars and curators. \nOrganized for the Cape Ann Museum by guest curator\, Eliza Rathbone\, Chief Curator Emerita of The Phillips Collection in collaboration with The Phillips Collection\, Washington\, D.C.

In early 2019\, Sue opened her own gallery and studio\, Arts Abound in Magnolia Village\, MA\, as an artistic haven for local artists. Through the gallery\, over 30 artists featured their creative works\, ranging from paintings\, hand-painted silk scarves\, silver jewelry\, and more. Sue also ran many workshops and classes featuring many of the artists. Often\, Sue would work late into the night\, painting in her Arts Abound studio. After closing the gallery in 2022\, Sue continued to offer the often sold-out painting classes\, taught by some of the Arts Abound artists. \nSue has studied under numerous artists to learn watercolor\, acrylic painting\, cold wax & oil\, and collage. Her goals for the Hammond Castle Museum sketch classes are to engage those who are new to the world of art and reinvigorate those who haven’t picked up a blank canvas or sketch pad in a long time. Sue’s philosophy on the creative process encourages you to be less concerned about the final product and instead to enjoy the journey of creativity and get lost in the moment. DESCRIPTION:“Avery\, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea” explores the artistic bond between three pivotal 20th century American artists—Milton Avery (1885–1965)\, Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974)\, and Mark Rothko (1903-1970)—whose shared summers in Gloucester\, Massachusetts\, from the 1920s to the mid-1940s had a lasting impact on their work. The exhibit is being presented through a collaboration between the Cape Ann Museum and The Phillips Collection (Washington\, D.C.). On view at the Cape Ann Museum from June 30 through September 27\, 2026\, the exhibition will then be displayed at The Phillips Collection from October 24\, 2026\, through January 24\, 2027. \nAs the first Cape Ann Museum generated show to then be taken on by another institution\, the Museum is working in close collaboration with all three artists’ estates. The show will feature over 82 works from the 1920s to the 1960s\, with loans from 26 prominent national and private institutional collections\, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, which is a central partner lending 10 works by Mark Rothko to the exhibition. Many works in this exhibition have never been on public view. \nThis unprecedented exhibit\, accompanied by a 224-page catalog produced by Rizzoli Electa\, will reveal the deep connections between these artists\, emphasizing their roles as both mentors and peers\, while showcasing the unique working methods and lifelong friendships that shaped their groundbreaking art. The catalog\, in addition to including essays by Eliza Rathbone\, will also feature contributions by prominent art scholars and curators. \nOrganized for the Cape Ann Museum by guest curator\, Eliza Rathbone\, Chief Curator Emerita of The Phillips Collection in collaboration with The Phillips Collection\, Washington\, D.C.
