SUMMARY:Emerging Perspectives\, Works by Artists 18-30
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Hours: Friday – Sunday\, 12-5pm \n‘Emerging Perspectives’ is a juried exhibition illuminating the vital and evolving voices of the region’s next generation of artists. This showcase serves as a bridge between the storied traditions of America’s oldest continuously operating art colony and the imaginative inquiries of creators aged 18 to 30. \nSelected by the RNAC Exhibitions Committee\, the exhibition presents a focused collection of work that captures a moment of professional becoming. SUMMARY:CAM Talk: Joseph Solman – A Leader of Expressionism in the Early 20th Century Who Never Stopped Finding Pattern\, Poetry\, and Drama in “the Subject\,” by Heather Atwood
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 9\, 2026\n2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.\nJanet & William Ellery James Center\, CAM Green\n13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\nCAM Members $5\, Non-Members $10.\nRegistration Required. Parking is first come\, first served and carpooling is encouraged. \nDue to limited parking\, a shuttle from an additional lot will be available and details will be sent closer to the day of the talk. \nAs the Cape Ann Museum opens its newly renovated space with an exhibition of Milton Avery\, Adolph Gottlieb\, and Mark Rothko\, it’s worth remembering their New York friend and colleague Joseph Solman\, a fellow leader of 20th‑century American Expressionism with similarly strong ties to Cape Ann. In 1935\, Solman\, Rothko\, and Gottlieb were all members of “The Ten\,” a group that challenged New York museums’ resistance to European Expressionism. While Rothko and Gottlieb later shifted toward Abstraction\, Solman spent his life creating Modernist works celebrated nationwide. Join Heather Atwood for a screening of her Color of Light video on Solman\, followed by a conversation with the artist’s son\, Emmy Award–winning journalist Paul Solman. \nThis lecture is presented in conjunction with the museum’s upcoming exhibition\, Avery\, Gottlieb\, & Rothko: By the Sea\, offering context and insight into the artists and themes in the exhibit. For more information about upcoming lectures for the exhibition\, please visit the Events Calendar. \nHeather Atwood has been examining Cape Ann Art and culture for years\, writing for The Gloucester Times\, Edible Boston\, and North Shore Magazine\, among others. Today\, she is a host and producer for 1623 Studios\, Cape Ann’s community access media station. Her work has been the recipient of a Mass Creator’s Award\, three awards from the Academy of Interactive and Visual Communications\, and a Davey Award. Her video series\, The Color of Light\, explores the lives and work of Cape Ann artists from the 19th century to present. The full series can be found on the 1623 Studios Youtube Channel under The Color of Light. \nPaul Solman is an American journalist focused on economics\, business\, and politics since the early 1970s. He has been the business and economics correspondent for the PBS NewsHour since 1985\, with occasional forays into art reporting. His work has been recognized with eight Emmys\, five Peabodys\, a Loeb award\, and a James Beard award for media. \nImage Credit: Joseph Solman\, Good Harbor Beach Scene\, 1980. Monotype on paper. SUMMARY:A Night of Comedy with Steve Sweeney & Guests
DESCRIPTION:Charlestown-born Steve Sweeney is known as the “undisputed King of Boston comedy“\, the embodiment of the city he calls home\, a local guy who has become a nationally recognizable talent. \nSweeney is known not only as a headlining comedian\, but also through his many memorable TV and movie appearances. During the early 1970s\, a small group of Boston ‘would-be’ comedians performed regularly at a comedy club started by Martin Olson and Barry Crimmins in a back room of the Chinese restaurant\, Ding-Ho\, near Inman Square in Cambridge\, MA. This group also included such unknowns as Lenny Clarke\, Kevin Meaney\, Jay Leno\, Bobcat Goldthwait\, Bill Sohonage\, and Steven Wright. Steve stood out from the crowd by incorporating his great insight into the New England political scene into his act. \nHe was the first of the Boston super-stars to break into television\, appearing on “Park Street Under\,” a Boston based sitcom that many believe was the inspiration for the highly successful television show “Cheers.” He’s also been on “Late Night with David Letterman\,” “Evening at The Improv” and “Comics Come Home.” You might remember his small but hilarious parts in films such as Rodney Dangerfield’s “Back to School\,” Judd Apatow’s “Celtic Pride\,” and “There’s Something About Mary” with Ben Stiller.

SUMMARY:Jon Butcher Axis – The Final Show – with Special Guest Johnny A
DESCRIPTION:The Jon Butcher Axis has been rocking rooms big and small off and on for 44 years\, from their early start at the legendary Rathskellar (‘The Rat’) and The Channel Club in Boston\, to 20\,000 seat arenas across the U.S.\, touring with the likes of Def Leppard\, Rush\, The J. Geils Band\, The Scorpions and INXS. Multiple videos on MTV and ferocious live shows helped them build a loyal and dedicated following\, especially across New England. But all good things must come to an end. Recently\, Jon Butcher announced via social media (see below) that he would be putting AXIS to bed after a couple Spring dates to close out their amazing history. Jon is and will remain as busy as ever with his other projects\, but he feels it’s time to give AXIS fans a couple more chances to see him and his longtime bandmates Chris Martin and Marty Richards playing a bunch of those classic songs one more time. There are just two shows remaining as of this writing\, so don’t miss your chance to catch them one last time. \n*Jon Butcher Axis post from their Facebook page on February 28th\, 2026. \nDear Fans\, Friends & Family \nIt is with a bittersweet mix of gratitude and appreciation that I announce that AXIS will play its final shows this Spring before calling it a day. And what a day it was! I’ll be posting pics\, music and more leading up to our final two shows in the coming weeks. And thank you\, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for sticking with us. I sincerely hope to see you at one of the shows for HOLY WAR\, LIFE TAKES A LIFE\, OCEAN IN MOTION and more! \nSpecial Guest Johnny A \nThe name ‘Johnny A.’ might not be so mainstream\, but there’s no doubt that it’s synonymous with guitar. \nHis passion began at the age of thirteen\, when he first saw the Beatles in Boston\, followed two years later by an in-person witnessing of Jimi Hendrix. From there\, he was hooked\, getting a cheap beginner guitar to try and play along with his early heroes — which also included Yardbirds icons Eric Clapton\, Jeff Beck\, and Jimmy Page.\nSoon enough\, Johnny A. got it. \nBy the 1970’s\, he was forming bands in the New England area\, drawing attention from several established musicians\, like Derek and the Dominos’ keyboardist Bobby Whitlock and Doug Clifford of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Johnny A. became Music Director of J. Geils Band singer Peter Wolf’s outfit\, coordinating the onstage arrangements\, playing on several tours and co-producing Wolf’s 1996 album\, *Long Line.* What’s more\, he was even asked to join The Yardbirds as their lead guitarist in 2015. \nAll this is to say that Johnny A. has the chops\, and that’s not to mention his prolific solo career. Spanning three full-length albums\, Johnny A. has earned a Grammy Award nomination\, the honor of Boston Music Awards\, “Blues Artist of the Year 2010\,” and a spot in the revered Boston Music Hall of Fame. Ever the restless spirit\, Johnny A. continues to glide across genres effortlessly\, exploring elements of jazz\, soul. He still fervently carries on the tradition of the legends he respected as a teen.

SUMMARY:CAM Talk: Artist Conversations Across Time: From Cape Ann to Rembrandt in Rothko’s “Thru the Window\,” by Elliot Bostwick Davis
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, June 3\, 2026\n2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.\nJanet & William Ellery James Center\, CAM Green\n13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\nCAM Members $5\, Non-Members $10.\nRegistration Required. Parking is first come\, first served and carpooling is encouraged. \nBy the late 1930s\, Mark Rothko stood at a threshold—geographically\, artistically\, and personally. Having spent summers on Cape Ann\, in Massachusetts\, he was immersed in the home life of the Averys and Gottliebs\, practicing artists whose studios\, routines\, and shared ambitions offered living models of artistic life beyond New York. At the same moment\, Rothko was absorbing the legacy of earlier painters who had grappled with the meaning of the artist’s vocation\, most notably Rembrandt. \nThis talk explores Rothko’s Thru the Window (1938-39) as a meditation on the nature of creative space. Bringing together the artistic life observed on Cape Ann\, the art-historical memory of Rembrandt’s Artist in His Studio\, and tensions within Rothko’s own marriage to artist-turned-designer Edith Sachar\, the painting emerges as a theatrical staging of artistic identity in formation. The window becomes both aperture and boundary—a site where present artistic conversations and inherited traditions converge. \nElliot Bostwick Davis is a former curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the John Moors Cabot Chair at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, where she was responsible for leading the curatorial program for the acclaimed Art of the Americas Wing designed by Foster+Partners\, and Director of the Norton Museum. She has published extensively on American art\, including on Fitz Henry Lane\, Winslow Homer\, Mary Cassatt\, Horace Pippin\, Loïs Maillou Jones\, Norman Lewis\, and Jamie Wyeth. Her most recent book\, Edward Hopper & Cape Ann: Illuminating an American Landscape (Rizzoli/Electa\, 2023) was a #1 Amazon Best Seller. Davis was a 2022 Fellow in Harvard’s Advanced Leadership Initiative\, and served as Senior Editor\, Arts and Culture for Harvard’s Social Impact Review until 2024. Her current book\, The Field Guide to Awe & Joy: Discovering Art That Makes Us Happier\, builds on her work on art and well-being\, including a recent essay\, “Art Museums as Catalysts for Human Flourishing\,” recently published in the Visual Arts Volume for the Humanities and Human Flourishing Project (Oxford University Press\, 2024). Davis is currently serving as Guest Curator for the exhibition\, Stuart Davis: Call and Response\, appearing at The Brandywine Museum of Art in Chadds Ford\, PA\, and the Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester MA in 2028. She received her A.B. cum laude from Princeton University\, and holds a Master’s from New York University\, and a doctorate in art and archaeology from Columbia University. \nImage Credit: Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606–1669)\, Artist in His Studio\, c. 1628.
