Getting Around Gloucester Just Got Easier: Ride CATA for Free Through the End of the Year
May 19, 2025 / A Local FavoriteWhether you’re planning a beach day, heading to a local festival, or just exploring downtown Gloucester, there’s never been a better time to hop on public transportation. The Cape Ann Transportation Authority (CATA) is offering free rides on all fixed-route buses and ADA/DAR van services through the end of the year—making it even easier and more affordable for visitors to enjoy everything the area has to offer. (Note: This offer excludes CATA On Demand services, free rides on fixed routes run through December 31, 2025.)
Here’s what you need to know to take full advantage of CATA’s offerings during your stay:
Free Buses All Year Long
CATA operates a number of fixed bus routes throughout Cape Ann, including service between Gloucester, Rockport, Essex, and Ipswich. From seaside sights to charming downtowns, these routes make it simple to explore the region without needing a car. And now, thanks to a fare-free initiative running through December 31, 2025 you can ride as often as you like without spending a dime.
Not sure which route to take? CATA’s website and printed schedules (available at area hotels, visitors centers, and aboard buses) make it easy to plan your trip.
Beach Day? Take the Stage Fort Park Shuttle
If you’re headed to Stage Fort Park, the CATA Stage Fort Park Shuttle is the stress-free way to get there. No need to worry about parking—just hop aboard and arrive steps from the sand, scenic views, and historic landmarks. The shuttle is perfect for families looking to enjoy Half Moon or Cressy’s Beach, visit the Gloucester Visitor Center, or picnic at the park.
If you qualify for ADA services with CATA or another transit agency and have questions about services, buses, and summer shuttles, give them a call at 978-283-7916 or email at customerservice@canntran.com.
CATA On Demand: Ride When and Where You Want
For destinations not served by a fixed route, CATA On Demand is your go-to option. This flexible service works like a ride-share—you book a trip using the CATA On Demand app, and a vehicle picks you up and drops you off within the service area. While CATA On Demand is not part of the fare-free initiative, it remains an affordable and convenient option for reaching more remote areas or traveling during off-peak hours.
The service is only $2 per ride and runs Monday-Friday, 6:30 am-8 pm. It’s perfect for getting to your destination after your train arrives at either Gloucester Commuter Rail station!
Special Event Shuttles: Fiesta, Schooner Festival & More

New and Eco-Friendly Vehicles
CATA is also rolling out new low-floor buses, three of which are electric, to enhance accessibility and sustainability. These upgrades will help ensure all riders—whether locals or visitors—have a smooth, comfortable experience. With lower floors, the new buses will help even more riders in our community get around town!
Plan Your Route and Get Onboard
Using CATA to get around Gloucester and beyond is not only easy—it’s now free (for fixed-route buses)! Whether you’re soaking up sun at the beach, enjoying fresh seafood downtown, or heading to one of Cape Ann’s signature events, public transportation offers a stress-free way to explore.
