The boats are back, the galleries are open, and the salty air feels like an invitation to spend more time in America’s Oldest Seaport. It’s that perfect in-between season with fewer crowds than summer, but plenty of energy, events, and reasons to visit.
Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a spontaneous day trip, here’s how to make the most of May in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

What’s Happening This Month
The month begins with From the Deep on May 2, a dynamic arts celebration that transforms downtown Gloucester into a hub of creativity. Expect gallery openings, live art, poetry, and immersive installations throughout the Harbortown Cultural District, all designed to showcase the city’s vibrant artistic spirit.
A week later, the Gloucester Lyceum hosts Our Democracy on May 9, a thought-provoking public forum featuring Harvard professor Steven Levitsky, co-author of How Democracies Die. Moderated by acclaimed journalist Callie Crossley, this free event invites the community into an engaging conversation about the state of democracy today.
If you’re feeling inspired to get creative yourself, local artist Melody Phaneuf is offering a four-week painting workshop beginning May 7. Her “Interpreting Light & Color” series focuses on using water-based oils in a small, welcoming group setting—ideal for beginners and experienced painters alike.
Looking for something family-friendly? Greenbelt’s Birds, Bees & Butterflies event on May 16 is a seasonal favorite. Held at Cox Reservation, this hands-on celebration of pollinators includes crafts, scavenger hunts, live beekeeping demonstrations, and activities for all ages.
Stop by Fish City Studios for works by local artists like Jon Sarkin, or catch a live performance with Lanes Coven Theater Co., a small but dynamic addition to the local arts scene.
Goodlinens Studio is adding a new layer of personalization to the shopping experience in Gloucester with the launch of a gift registry. Guests are welcome to browse in person during open hours or schedule private shopping appointments to curate a registry of thoughtful, beautifully selected home goods. It’s a unique way to celebrate milestones or simply bring more intentional, locally inspired design into everyday living.

Get Out on the Water
No visit to Gloucester in May is complete without time on the ocean. Whale watch season is officially underway, and spring is one of the best times to go. With fewer crowds and active marine life, trips with Cape Ann Whale Watch and 7 Seas Whale Watch offer unforgettable encounters with humpbacks, finbacks, and more.
For a laid back experience, Maritime Heritage Charters is kicking off their public sail season with a Celtic Music Sail on May 24, and private charters are available throughout the season. Additional schooner sails kick off in early May with Schooner Lannon, and private sailing charters are available from Rocky Neck with Artemis Sails.
Where to Eat This May
May marks the return of outdoor waterfront dining. Mile Marker One reopens its Bridge Deck on Mother’s Day, just in time for al fresco meals, tropical cocktails, and harbor views.
Nearby in Essex, Woodman’s serves up its iconic fried seafood, while Gloucester’s Common Crow Natural Market is a go-to for fresh, local provisions, perfect for a picnic by the shore.

Plan Your Spring Stay
If you’re planning an overnight, Gloucester offers plenty of places to stay. Atlantis Oceanfront Inn delivers classic coastal views, while The Hotel at Cape Ann Marina features newly renovated rooms and easy access to dining and the waterfront.

Looking Ahead to Summer
With even more openings, events, and summer favorites on the horizon in June, now is the perfect time to experience Gloucester as our peak season is just beginning.
The Sargent House Museum is beginning a major multi-year reimagining project focused on highlighting the lives and legacy of Judith Sargent Murray and the Rev. John Murray, two influential figures in early American thought, religion, and women’s rights. While the museum will continue operating as usual through the 2026 season, a refreshed interpretive focus will begin to take shape, with a full shift planned for 2027. The project also welcomes several new board members, marking an important step in the museum’s next chapter of storytelling and preservation.
Beach parking reservations are required beginning Memorial Day and running through Labor Day at Good Harbor Beach, Stage Fort Park, and Wingaersheek Beach using the Blinkay app. Visit our Beaches page to learn more and plan your visit.
No car? No problem! Getting around town is easy with CATA (Cape Ann Transportation Authority), which is offering free rides through the end of the year.
