Folly Cove Beach is a dramatic and scenic cove located right on the Gloucester–Rockport line at the northern tip of Cape Ann. Known for its towering granite cliffs, clear waters, and stunning views of the open Atlantic, it’s a favorite spot for scuba divers, artists, and nature lovers seeking a more rugged coastal experience.
The underwater landscape just beyond the cove features a spectacular drop-off known as the “great wall,” attracting scuba divers from all over New England. Divers can explore a rich variety of marine life, including colorful sea anemones, lobsters, and schools of fish, making Folly Cove one of the top shore diving destinations in Massachusetts. Visibility is often excellent, especially in the early morning.
Above the surface, the cove’s steep rock ledges and unique light make it a magnet for painters, photographers, and plein air artists. It’s also a peaceful place to enjoy tide pooling, seal sightings, or simply take in the coastal beauty. The beach is rocky rather than sandy, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
Please note that parking is extremely limited, especially in peak summer months. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early or consider alternative transportation such as the CATA bus. Access to the cove is via a short but rocky path near the intersection of Rt. 127 and Gott Avenue.
For experienced divers, artists seeking natural inspiration, or travelers in search of Cape Ann’s wilder side, Folly Cove Beach is a breathtaking destination well worth the visit.
