The Fishermen’s Wives Memorial in Gloucester, MA honors the courage and resilience of the women and children who stood on shore while fishermen sailed into the unknown. Created by sculptor Morgan Faulds Pike and dedicated in August 2001, this 12-foot bronze statue depicts a steadfast widow holding a small child while touching the shoulder of another, symbolizing strength, hope, and family commitment.
Commissioned by the Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives Association (GFWA), the memorial reflects decades of advocacy and fundraising by the wives and families seeking recognition for their essential role in the fishing community. The base bears an inscription honoring wives, mothers, daughters, and sisters around the world for their faith, diligence, and fortitude.
Far more than a sculpture, this work pays tribute to the many lost at sea and acknowledges the emotional strength of those waiting ashore. It stands near the waterfront as a powerful reminder of Gloucester’s maritime heritage and the profound, interwoven bonds between sea and shore.
