Eastern Point Lighthouse marks the entrance to Gloucester Harbor and stands as one of Cape Ann’s most iconic maritime landmarks. Originally built in 1832 and still an active aid to navigation, the current lighthouse dates back to 1890 and remains operated by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Although the lighthouse station is not open to the public, visitors can walk the adjacent Dog Bar Breakwater, a dramatic 2,250-foot granite jetty that extends into the Atlantic. From the breakwater, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of Gloucester Harbor on one side and the open ocean on the other, with the Boston skyline visible on clear days. The view of the lighthouse from the breakwater is particularly stunning, especially at sunrise or sunset.
The breakwater is open year-round and offers opportunities for walking, photography, birdwatching, and seal spotting during cooler months. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the surface of the breakwater can be uneven or slippery depending on conditions.
Located at the end of Eastern Point Boulevard, parking near the lighthouse is extremely limited and not permitted at the gate. Visitors are advised to park respectfully along nearby public areas and walk in. This scenic spot is a favorite for locals and visitors alike seeking dramatic ocean views and a touch of Gloucester’s seafaring history.
