One of the most cherished traditions in Gloucester, Massachusetts is St. Peter’s Fiesta, a vibrant celebration that blends deep-rooted Catholic faith, Italian-American heritage, and the city’s proud commercial fishing culture.
Held each year during the week leading up to and the weekend closest to June 29th (Saint Peter’s Feast Day), the festival honors Saint Peter, the patron saint of fishermen. What began as a religious observance has grown into a five-day city-wide celebration that brings together locals and visitors for music, food, tradition, and waterfront festivities.

A Celebration of Faith, Fishing, and Community
St. Peter’s Fiesta is centered around both spiritual devotion and community pride. Each year, the festival opens with the Novena to St. Peter, held over nine evenings leading up to the main celebration. This devotional tradition sets the tone for the week and reflects the city’s strong Catholic heritage.
Throughout the Fiesta, St. Peter’s Square becomes a hub of activity featuring live music, entertainment, food vendors, and community gatherings. One of the most meaningful traditions is the procession of the St. Peter statue and oars down Rogers Street, a tribute to Gloucester’s fishing fleet and those who have made their living on the sea.
Other beloved events include the blessing of the commercial fishing fleet, Seine boat races in the harbor, a 5K road race hosted with the Cape Ann YMCA, and a lively carnival that draws families from across Cape Ann and beyond.
The festival is organized by the St. Peter’s Fiesta Committee and proudly celebrates Gloucester’s Italian-American community, whose influence has played a major role in shaping the city’s cultural identity.

The Famous Greasy Pole Contest
Each year, participants attempt to walk out over the harbor on a long, heavily greased telephone pole mounted above the water. At the end of the pole, a small flag is placed just out of reach. Competitors must carefully (and often unsuccessfully) make their way across the slippery surface, slipping, sliding, and sometimes diving into the water below in the process.
The challenge is unpredictable, and falling from the pole can mean a splash from up to 20 feet above the water. Safety crews and the Coast Guard are always on standby, but the real reward is the honor of reaching the flag and earning ultimate bragging rights for the year.
It’s part athletic skill, part balance, and part sheer determination, and it never fails to draw huge crowds to the harbor.
