There’s a reason Gloucester has been a favorite summer destination for generations. America’s Oldest Seaport blends beautiful beaches, fresh seafood, scenic coastal drives, fascinating history, and a thriving arts scene into one unforgettable getaway. Whether you’re planning a relaxing escape by the ocean or a long weekend packed with adventure, Gloucester offers plenty to fill out a few days (or more!)

Ocean House Hotel at Bass Rocks

Day One: Settle In & Experience the Coast

Kick off your getaway by checking into Ocean House Hotel at Bass Rocks, where sweeping Atlantic views, comfortable accommodations, and a peaceful oceanside setting immediately put you into vacation mode. Start your stay slowly with coffee overlooking the water before heading out to explore Gloucester’s coastline.

Spend your afternoon wandering through Gloucester’s downtown shops and galleries. Just steps from the working waterfront, you can explore Main Street, where you can pick up your next beach read at The Bookstore of Gloucester or Dogtown Books, or shop for new summer sandals at Mark Adrian Shoes.

As the afternoon winds down, stop by Turner’s Seafood Market & Fish ‘n’ Chips Shoppe for dinner. Known throughout New England for exceptionally fresh seafood and classic coastal favorites, it’s the perfect place to pick up a lobster roll, fish sandwich, or the best fish ‘n’ chips in town. Order takeout and retreat back to Ocean House Hotel to end the night with a delicious dinner by the ocean just steps from your room.

Hammond Castle Museum courtyard

Day Two: History, Beaches & Ocean Views

After breakfast, spend your morning exploring one of Gloucester’s most iconic landmarks: Hammond Castle Museum. Perched dramatically atop the rocky coastline, this medieval-inspired castle was built by inventor John Hays Hammond Jr. and combines stunning architecture, ocean views, fascinating collections, and one-of-a-kind history. The castle’s stone passageways, courtyards, and seaside setting make it one of the most unique attractions anywhere on the North Shore.

From there, head to Wingaersheek Beach, famous for its soft white sand, calm waters, and expansive tidal flats that seem to stretch for hundreds of feet at low tide. It’s one of the best beaches in New England for families, beachcombing, paddleboarding, and spending a relaxing summer afternoon by the water.

During the summer season, non-resident beach parking reservations are required in advance. Download the Blinkay app ahead of your trip to reserve parking at Wingaersheek Beach, Good Harbor Beach, and Stage Fort Park.

After a few hours at the beach, head over to Rocky Neck Art Colony. One of the oldest artist colonies in the country, Rocky Neck is a must-visit summer destination in Gloucester with artist galleries and studios, seasonal exhibitions, and spectacular waterfront views. During the season, Cape Ann Harbor Tours runs a water shuttle between Harbortown and Rocky Neck, making easy (and beautiful!) to get across the harbor.

Cap off your evening with dinner on the water at 51 Rocky Neck. With specialty cocktails, fresh seafood, sandwiches, salads, and more, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a meal by the water after a day of exploring Gloucester.

Day Three: Explore More of Cape Ann

Before heading home, take a short scenic drive to neighboring Rockport, one of New England’s most picturesque seaside villages. Wander the shops along Bearskin Neck, admire Motif No. 1, browse local art galleries, and enjoy the slower pace of this charming coastal town.

While you’re there, stop into Denim Blanket Co., a locally owned lifestyle boutique featuring thoughtfully curated apparel, accessories, home décor, and gifts inspired by coastal New England, along with their USA-made blankets. If you’re looking for a new cozy sweatshirt, the perfect beach-day accessory, or a unique souvenir to remember your trip, it’s well worth a visit while exploring Rockport.

If you have extra time to extend your getaway, consider adding a day trip to nearby Salem. The MBTA Commuter Rail makes it easy to travel between Gloucester and Salem without worrying about parking.

Whether you’re relaxing beside the ocean, discovering centuries of history, shopping local boutiques, or enjoying some of the freshest seafood in New England, Gloucester offers everything you need for an unforgettable long weekend!
