From schooner sails and open studios to historic reenactments and beloved cultural traditions, June is one of the most exciting times to experience America’s Oldest Seaport.

Whether you’re planning a beach getaway, an arts-focused weekend, or a chance to explore Cape Ann at the start of the summer, here’s how to make the most of June in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Cape Ann Artisans fall tour

What’s Happening This Month

June begins with a celebration of creativity during the 43rd Annual Cape Ann Artisans Open Studios on June 6–7. Visitors are invited inside working studios across Gloucester and Rockport to meet artists, explore creative spaces, and shop directly from local makers. This self-guided tour highlights everything from pottery and quilting to photography, mosaics, textiles, watercolor painting, and eco-friendly glass art, offering a rare opportunity to experience Cape Ann’s arts community where the work is actually made.

Rocky Neck Art Colony kicks off the season with its monthly Historic Walking Tours, offering visitors a deeper look into the country’s oldest continuously operating art colony. Nearby galleries and studios are also hosting a full lineup of exhibits and workshops throughout the month.

At Cove Gallery, “Play as Practice” remains on view through June 21, alongside “Rhythm and Rhyme: Works Inspired by Music and Lyrics,” (through June 28) a vibrant exhibition exploring the connection between visual art and sound. Later in the month, the gallery opens “Let Go,” a new exhibit running June 25 through July 19.

Whale Rock Art Studio & Gallery is also bringing bold color to Gloucester this month with “Color of Whimsy,” on view June 4–27. Featuring work by Rebecca Anne Nagle, Juni VanDyke, and Deborah Gonet, the exhibition celebrates expressive color and playful abstraction, with an opening reception on Friday, June 5 from 5–7 p.m.

Also on Friday, June 5, you can experience an unforgettable night of drag, comedy, and live entertainment at Queens at the Castle, at Hammond Castle Museum. Hosted by Boston drag icon Kris Knievil and featuring performances by Onyx, Chanel the Angel, and Doriann Blonch, this 21+ event promises an evening of high-energy performances, glamour, and plenty of laughs in one of Gloucester’s most unique settings.

Greenbelt’s beloved Art in the Barn returns June 12–13 at the stunning Allyn Cox Reservation in Essex. Featuring work from more than 130 regional artists, this annual exhibition and sale combines fine art with conservation, showcasing paintings, sculpture, photography, ceramics, woodworking, and more against the backdrop of the Great Marsh. Friday evening’s opening reception includes live music, local food vendors, and artist meet-and-greets, making it one of the North Shore’s signature early summer arts events.

Schooner Adventure

June 12 also marks the first public sail of the season aboard Schooner Adventure, Gloucester’s historic National Historic Landmark schooner. Stepping aboard offers visitors a chance to experience Gloucester’s maritime heritage firsthand while sailing the same waters that shaped the city’s fishing history.

On June 19, the Cape Ann Museum hosts the 6th Annual Gloucester Juneteenth Celebration at Gloucester City Hall. The free community gathering includes a flag raising ceremony followed by a public reading and discussion of Frederick Douglass’s powerful speech, What to the Slave is the Fourth of July? The event offers an opportunity for reflection, conversation, and community connection in recognition of the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

One of Gloucester’s most anticipated summer events takes place  June 20–21 with the Battle of Gloucester Reenactment at Stage Fort Park. This immersive Revolutionary War event brings history to life with live battle reenactments, encampments, demonstrations, and family-friendly programming along Gloucester Harbor.

The month closes with one of Gloucester’s most beloved celebrations: St. Peter’s Fiesta, June 24–28. Honoring Gloucester’s Italian-American fishing community and patron saint of fishermen, Fiesta fills the waterfront with music, processions, carnival rides, seine boat races, food, and the famous Greasy Pole contest. It’s a uniquely Gloucester tradition and an unforgettable way to experience the city’s maritime culture and community spirit.

Public Art and Community Creativity

Gloucester is also looking ahead to the future of public art downtown. The City of Gloucester is currently accepting applications for a new temporary window mural initiative along Main Street.

The project, themed “Imagining Gloucester’s Future,” will pair selected artists with local businesses to create hand-painted window murals celebrating Gloucester’s culture, waterfront identity, tourism, and creative spirit. Up to eight artists or artist teams will be selected, with applications due June 15.

This initiative reflects Gloucester’s continued investment in arts and culture as a central part of the city’s identity and visitor experience.
